Facebook is about to launch their timeline module that will "Tell your life story with a new kind of profile." and why you should opt-out while you still have a chance for your future good.
The basic idea behind Facebook's timeline will allow whatever images, videos and whatever else you are currently sharing on Facebook organized into a way to track your whole life. This is the main reason why you should either opt-out of this module or completely stop using Facebook as it is an intrusion of your privacy. Yes, it is nice to use Facebook before this idea of the timeline as it has its positive points about connecting people together, however, think for a moment what could happen if you don't opt-out of timeline. Facebook is not going to tell you that they don't care about your privacy and , if anything, they will say that they take it very seriously. However let's think what would happen if Facebook were to get a subpoena from the government, especially the American government where Facebook business is located and operates under the law there. Facebook will have to comply and hand over all of your information to the government, they are not going to protect you as you think, they may stall the process to show the public that they are pretending to protect you because they need to protect their business, but eventually what you don't want the government to see they will see.
This is not about being paranoid, especially if you are not guilty of anything and have no reason to hide, but there is a real clear danger of abuse here. If anyone agrees to this timeline idea they are basically saying to Facebook, please put a tracking device on me and follow me everywhere I go because you will have consented to allow them to put an invisible collar around your neck and you don't even realize it.
In addition to government agencies tracking you down for whatever reason, there is also the personal relationships between your friends and family, you don't want them to know what you've done every hour, minute and second because there are things that you would want to keep private for your own reasons and for theirs. This is critically important when you have to think about personal relationships with your future girlfriends/boyfriends and husband or wife. Imagine how the timeline can wreck havoc in that scenario.
And finally, think about your future employment opportunities, somehow and someway whatever you put on the Internet, although you think is private have a way of getting out there for everyone to see. Again, think about this point, you are at a job, but you decide to leave for whatever reason, do you really want your employer to track you down to ask you "Why?" because they might have access to your Facebook timeline. We've seen jobs lost already during the hockey riot in Vancouver because employers were able to find information that are supposed to be private.
So before you agree to Facebook's timeline think again about your future as there are some things that we should keep to ourselves. Just say "No" to Facebook's timeline.
