Plastic bag fee should be scrapped

Rycycle plastic bags

Rob Ford and his Toronto's executive committee did the right thing by voting 6 -1 to scrap the plastic bag fee as it is just an unnecessary tax for the consumers and could potentially be harmful to your health.

First Greece then France: The Euro Zone is Dead

May
09

We have finally seen the people's take on the austerity measures being imposed on them and they don't like it.  There were two elections that indicated that the Euro Zone is dead; everyone else seems to know it except for the architects, or else they are living in denial.

How many times must Greece seek a bail to rescue their economy?  Apparently, it's every other month, we keep on hearing Greece needs more money otherwise the government and the economy will collapse and, of course,  Germany and France come through the last dying moments for them just to calm the market, but always with a price of forced austerities.  The Greek people are all nervous and don't know what to do, either diversifying their interests for those that can while the rest of the Greek citizens wonder where their future is headed in these uncertain times.

Are Quebecers better protesters?

May
08

Quebec student protest

When it comes to protesting we have to give it to Quebecers, they are just better protesters than the rest of Canadians.  As we have seen the recent students protest over tuition fee increase, they really are passionate and have demonstrated that they, both the young and old, will hit the streets to show their disdain for policies that they feel are unfair or against their way of life.

No surprise: Toronto wants stores to donate part of 5 cent fee

May
08

It's no surprise that Toronto wants major retail stores to "donate' part of the 5 cents plastic bag fee that they charge customers to go toward one of their pet projects as they see an opportunity for a cash grab.  In this case, it's for planting tree that was ravaged by beetles as reported in today's Toronto Star newspaper.

The fight continues with Toronto Star newspaper and Mayor Rob Ford

Mayor Rob Ford versus The Toronto Star newspaper

As much as it is to our displeasure in hearing the ongoing saga between the mayor of Toronto, Rob Ford, and the Toronto Star newspaper cat-fight we now have  the latest incident of harassing and stalking of the mayor which, if true,  is a new low for The Star.  Of course the different media outlets were quick to report the incident and it has now become pretty much public news.

Basically the mayor was alerted by his neighbor, Mr. Gagro,  that a suspicious person was peeping into his backyard on cinder blocks and that person happens to be the Toronto Star photo journalist, Daniel Dale.  Afterward the mayor came out and a confrontation ensues with the mayor being so angry that he said he was really close to punching Daniel Dale while the reporter said he fled because he was fearful of the mayor.

Wrong again! Polling companies just can't get it right

These days it must be hard to be a pollster working for such companies as Compas Research, Ipsos Canada, Angus Reid and  Nanos Research because they have been getting the important issues facing Canadians wrong quite often of late.  Can we really believe anything coming out from these companies in the future without thinking that they are all incompetent or worst that they have a hidden agenda?

Dalton McGuinty and Andrea Horwath join forces to tax the rich

Apr
24

In order to avoid another provincial election the Liberal leader, Dalton McGuinty, and NDP leader, Andrea Horwath, have joined forces to tax the rich.

Anyone making over $500,000 will be taxed 2% to help pay down Ontario's deficit according to the Liberals and the new tax is expected to generate about $470 million annually for the government.  This is good news to the common folks who feel that they have been taxed long enough and it's time that the rich gets a taste of the same medicine.

Of course in these times of austerity measures that are happening around the world, the NDP have won a symbolic victory for their party base as they have shown that they can work with a minority government and get their agenda fulfilled.

Rob Ford must reinvent himself to take back Toronto

Apr
17

Mayor Rob Ford 2.0

Our beloved mayor of Toronto, Rob Ford, has been taking quite a beating in the public opinion from being labeled as a lame duck mayor, an embarrassment to the post to the loneliest man in Toronto.  Although some of these assertions are not far from the truth, the mayor with about two years left in his term can still reinvent himself not only to be relevant in the eyes of the public, but also to take back the city's agenda.

How long will AOL survive?

Apr
14

AOL

Yesterday AOL, if many of you don’t know what it is, it’s America Online- the onetime internet giant that brought Time Warner Cable systems, sold 800 Patents to Microsoft for $1.1 Billion.  Living through the transition of AOL of yesteryears to AOL today I couldn’t help but to ponder.  Would AOL be the next Blockbuster?

The answer is yes, and it will be in 2 years.  Let looks at AOL business model.  80% of AOL’s revenue is subscribers, 75% of whom don’t need it.  Many of AOL Subscribers are still using internet dial up.  If you don’t know what’s dial up is just think fax machine for internet.  That’s right! People still pay AOL a lot of money for the privilege of checking email, and slow porn.

Safe injection sites in Toronto will be good for everyone

Apr
12

safe injection site, VancouverPremier Dalton McGuinty is finally warming up to the idea of safe injection sites after the recommendations by the University of Toronto and St. Michael's Hospital.

Previously he had been opposed to it during the provincial election saying that "it is not in our plan, was never in our plan, it is not our intention to have one of those in Ontario", but now he has changed his mind going on to say  “When it comes to this kind of thing we’ll rely on the advice we get from our people like the chief medical officer of health, and if the police have advice that they wish to offer, we’ll pay attention to that too,” McGuinty said. “I have the responsibility, at all times, to be open to the best advice.”
